While we will develop an individualized plan for your home, we often recommend:
Sealing air leaks and adding insulation
Sealing air leaks is the first step to making your home more energy-efficient. Air leaks around your house, especially leaks in the basement and attic can cause significant loss of heated or cooled air. These leaks can make your house uncomfortable and make your heating or cooling system work harder. After sealing leaks, we may also recommend adding insulation to make rooms more comfortable.
Improving heating and cooling systems
If your furnace or air conditioner is more than 10 years old, we may recommend replacing it with a unit that has earned the ENERGY STAR® label. When properly sized and installed, these high-efficiency units can save you up to 20% on heating and cooling costs.
Sealing ductwork
Many homes have leaky or uninsulated duct work that can cause heated or cooled air to be distributed unevenly through the house. Sealing, fixing, and insulating ductwork can make your home more consistently comfortable and help your heating and cooling system work more efficiently.
Upgrading lighting and appliances
Energy used for lighting and appliances can account for nearly half of your utility bill. Installing ENERGY STAR qualified lighting and appliances can make a big difference. Renewable energy systems, such as solar electricity or solar hot water heating, provide even more savings.
ENERGY STAR, sponsored by the U.S. EPA and U.S. DOE, helps us all save money and protect the environment with energy-efficient products and practices. Products in more than 40 categories can earn the government's ENERGY STAR label. Learn more at www.energystar.gov.
